Located at Praia Grande, Sintra, Surf Academia Hope Zones is rooted in one of Portugal’s most beautiful coastal landscapes. It is the place where people come to learn surfing, build confidence in the ocean, and develop a deeper connection with the sea.

Surf Academia was founded by João Macedo, big wave surfer, Patagonia Ambassador, President of Hope Zones Foundation, and co-founder of Save The Waves Coalition’s iconic World Surfing Reserves program. João created Surf Academia more than 25 years ago — as more than a surf school — a place for real, hands-on ocean experiences that connect people deeply to the sea and inspire them to protect it.

Our teaching is based on Method 7, a self-developed surf education methodology recognized by the International Surfing Association. Developed through decades of ocean experience at Praia Grande, it has helped shape generations of surfers such as professional big wave surfers Nic Von Rupp, Tomás Valente, and João Guedes.

We open the door to the ocean to everyone — not only as a playground, but as a living ecosystem worth understanding, respecting, and defending.
