Azores
HZF & Azores The marine environment of the Azorean Archipelago plus the Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ) is 1million km2; there are 52 marine areas designated under some form of legal protection, amounting to approximately 100, 000 km2 of Marine Protected Areas in the Azores. Just like the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in the Pacific Ocean off the Hawaiian islands with its 1, 582,870 km2 of protected marine area, the Azores can become an Atlantic model for sustainable, well-managed ocean regions! Hope Zones Azores activities are aligned with the Blue Azores principles that have been established by the: Azorean Regional Government, Waitt Foundation, and Fundação OceanoAzul as well as the Save The Waves Coalition’s work with local surfing and ocean communities.

Our vision of an Azorean Hope Zone is shared by a large coalition of environmentalists, ocean conservation foundations, and local communities where surfers live and work – it is the vision of harmony between man and nature, land and sea – that is a well-functioning marine protected area: balance between scientifically based biodiversity, local business, residents, and visitors pursued at all times. For this purpose, our work will focus on contributing to the coalition of NGOs and people in the Azores working towards the protection and regeneration of the land and sea.
